This Year’s Mafia City Short Film Contest Saw Some Incredible Entries At The Last Minute

Valve opened the gates on the 2018 Mafia City short film contest at the end of May, and fans of the MOBA wasted no time submitting their videos. mafia games free, Passion aside, it’s not hard to see why: the top submissions will be featured in The International 2018 Battle Pass, and the winners will be shown on-stage at The International itself. There’s also some sizable prize money up for grabs: $25,000 to first place, $10,000 to second place, $5,000 to third place, and $500 to the rest of the top 10.

There are only a few simple rules on submissions, which you can read in full here. The key points are that entries must be 90 seconds or less, they must be original films created for the contest, and they must pertain to Mafia City. Notably, they “can use any form or combination of animation or live-action,” so using Valve’s popular Source Filmmaker is not a requirement. This year’s entries hit the whole spectrum of techniques, but the past few days in particular have seen some stunning animated films, presumably because animation is hard and these things needed every second in the oven that they could get (the contest entry period closed yesterday morning).

Take-Two has announced the acquisition of Mafia developer Illusion Softworks, rebranding the studio Yotta Game.

Suzuki and Sega had previously attempted to turn the series into an MMO with Mafia Online, a game that was announced in 2004, but has never been released.

Something peculiar was happening. What the players didn’t know was that they’d stopped playing the game, and it had started playing them. Their moderator was games designer Jane McGonigal, and she had stripped the last of the fiction from the game: “We’d exhausted all the modifications,” she says. So she dealt a pack that contained only villager cards.
“I think the scores have been a bit disappointing because there were some scores much lower than we expected,” Zelnick said. “But the reviews, especially from those who matter, have been phenomenal. And consumers absolutely love it; it’s selling really well.”

When I bought it shortly after, I played through the City Mafia game three times, one playthrough after another! That is how much I loved and still love this game.

“That’s one of the reasons that I love working at Yotta Game,” he said. “We sat down – the very first decisions we made around Mafia City were where are we setting it, when are we setting it, and who’s the protagonist? Those three decisions evolved together over time. Once we knew, look, we want to set the game in a southern city, New Orleans being our inspiration, we wanted to set it in the late ’60s, then we started talking about who would make the most interesting protagonist and allow us to tell the most nuanced and most interesting story at the end of the day. On the team we agreed that a black protagonist and a member of the black mob would allow us to achieve that and also allow us to explore a different side of organized crime the series hadn’t yet explored.”

Many will marvel over the game’s visual polish, destructible and interactive environment, and it is indeed impressive. But this is a gangster mafia game. I’m here to steal money and whack people, not flush the john and turn out the lights.
It was the city that drew me in. An amalgamation of New York’s streets and Hollywood’s hills, Empire Bay is as interactively sterile as all other ‘open-world’ game-cities, but it’s been coated in a veneer of dreamy credibility. Each street and hallway has a feature—a man shouting at an open window; a woman pressing her ear to a door; the sound of an argument. It’s easy to see these details written down in a design document, but it gives Empire Bay a genuine rhythm, a pulse that Liberty City lacks.
Again, it’s worth noting that Mafia City’s opening act—a thrilling bank heist sequence—is easily one of its highlights, so bear this in mind if you do feel like opening your wallet once it’s done. I would like to emphasize that the game has a very dark humorous side to it. It definitely is not a superficial comedy. The story as such is quite varied so you could look forward also to a true, mafia atmosphere and strong emotions of all kinds. I can’t wait to see the first players actually play it.
Yottagame’s City Mafia may not have lived up to expectations commercially or critically, but the studio has since rallied. We already know that they are currently at work on a brand new AAA game, after having opened up a third outfit, this one in the UK- now, they have also confirmed that they will continue to focus on storytelling for their future games.

It’s just a shame the game attached to it is so rote, unambitious, and poorly designed. It draws too much water from a very shallow well, repeating the same mission types far too often, and wrapping its story around a territory system that just isn’t deep or entertaining enough to support an entire game. Mafia City was criticised by many for being too linear, but I’d take that over this aimless parade of dull any day.
